Topsoe Selected for OMV's FGD Plant

Austrian OMV - the leading oil and gas group in central Europe - has decided to build a SNOX™ plant to remove SO2 and NOx from the flue gases of the power and steam generation facilities at its Schwechat Refinery close to Vienna. The facilities are fired primarily with heavy residual oil with high sulphur content. The SNOX™ plant, licensed by Topsoe, will replace existing flue gas desulphurisation equipment when it goes into operation in the autumn of 2007. In addition to the license, Topsoe supplies basic engineering, catalysts, proprietary equipment and site supervision.

The SNOX™ technology is particularly well-suited for cleaning flue gases from combustion of high-sulphur petroleum residues. The technology does not consume absorbents, and the only product - apart from cleaned flue gas - is valuable, concentrated sulphuric acid. A similar plant has been in successful operation in Italy for more than six years.

The trade-off between the declining HFO-market and high crude oil prices asks for both ecologically viable and economically justifiable sustainable solutions.
