Orders Mount for Innovative Compressor Design

Peter Brotherhood has secured another order worth £1.5 million ($2.1 million) to supply two innovative compressor packages to a Chinese refinery.

The Peterborough, UK, based supplier of engineered equipment for the refining, petrochemical and process industries has won a series of Chinese orders for the packages, which can significantly cut processing costs.

The latest contract is from China Petroleum Material & Equipment (Group) Corporation for the Liaohe Petrochemical Company refinery at Liaohe, in the Bohai Basin of north eastern China.

Each package is based around what appears to be a typical four-cylinder reciprocating compressor - but two cylinders of each machine will handle hydrogen make-up gas whilst the other two simultaneously handle hydrogen recycle gas for diesel fuel hydrofining.

Conventionally this type of requirement would be met with two medium-sized reciprocating compressors to handle make-up gas (one running and one on stand-by). The recycle gas would be handled by a single centrifugal compressor, which would have to be backed up with a full set of spares (including a spare rotor).

Opting for Peter Brotherhood’s solution of two large reciprocating compressors, each capable of handling the full make-up and recycle load, will provide a higher level of reliability at a lower initial cost and with lower power demand than the more conventional solution.

This type of machine has also been supplied to four other refineries in China and is similar to two supplied to Dalian Refinery during 1998.
