Begg Cousland - Mist Elimination, Droplet Separation and Gas Scrubbing


Begg Cousland are internationally renowned for their knitted wire mesh demisters and other filters. Begg Cousland specialises in the design and manufacture of mist eliminators; a broad range of wire and fibre form products used for industrial air pollution control and in-process filtration. These cover the spectrum of liquid and fume collection.

Begg Cousland also specialises in the development of gas cleaning technologies and equipment including rotary scrubbers, absorbtion columns and turnkey filtration systems.

KNITTED MESH PADS

Becoil demisting units are impingement type separators consisting of multiple layers of mesh knitted from metal or plastic monofilaments. They have uniform voidage with an extremely high ratio of filament surface area per unit volume of pad.

Becoil demisting units have been specially designed to achieve highly efficiency removal - up to 100% on entrained droplets above 5 microns in size, while generating low pressure losses and are virtually maintenance free.

COALESCER MESHES

To further the collection efficiency below 5 microns, the Becone coalescer was developed. The combined Becone and Becoil installation as a single or double stage arrangement increases collection efficiency to 98% or more in the 2-5 micron range.

LIQUID-LIQUID SEPARATORS

For liquid/liquid separations we offer Becophase plate and knitted mesh coalescers in a wide range of materials. Depending upon the requirement they can be used solely or in combination to separate a wide range of mechanically induced emulsions.

Mono-filament knitted mesh coalescers are best suited for finer separations and lower velocity flow regimes. In water/hydrocarbon separations they are capable of reducing oil concentrations from 500ppm to as low as 15ppm.

Multi-filament knitted mesh coalescers offer an even finer separating ability with certain emulsions. A multi-filament knitted mesh coalescer can separate the same 500ppm of hydrocarbons in water down to as low as 5ppm.

CANDLE FILTER MIST ELIMINATORS

Becofil Mist Eliminators, commonly referred to as Candle Filters, are intended primarily for the removal of very fine mist particles of less than 3 microns. Begg Cousland offer a range of filters to conform to the varying requirements of industry in terms of capacity, pressure loss and mist removal efficiency. They help to eliminate visible stack plumes, meet stringent air pollution regulations and recover more lost products from processes.

BECOFLEX ROTARY SCRUBBER / WET DUST REMOVAL

Begg Cousland's specialization in the field of wet gas filtration has found many applications with a need for efficient solid/gas removal. We offer the efficient but simple 'Rotary Scrubbing System' under license. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with a packed bed, atomised spray or with our high efficiency coalescers and mist eliminators.

In a plant making terephthalic acid, there are silos filled by mechanical or pneumatic conveying. The filling and emptying of these silos generates vent gas which has to be treated before going to atmosphere. Such vent gas treatment involves the removal of large amounts of dusts and there is an acetic and benzoic acid odour problem also.

The main benefits of BECOFLEX for PTA plants are :

  • The system is compact (sits on the silo roof) and self cleaning
  • The dynamic scrubbing removes solids, neutralises odours and acts as its own air mover all as one piece of equipment
  • There is no addition to the pressure loss - in fact, with pneumatically fed hoppers, the BECOFLEX air movement helps the vacuum effect in the silo

HOT GAS FILTRATION AND CERAMIC FILTERS

Begg Cousland has recently licensed the Caldo technology for hot gas filtration systems and ceramic filters for chemical and other applications such as acid waste incineration, avoiding the cost of cooling the gas first.

Caldo ceramic filter installations are ideal for the abatement of pollution from incineration processes giving:

  • Flexibility in the temperature at which gases are treated
  • Avoidance of dioxin reformation and pluming of stacks
  • Acid gas removal by dry scrubbing with lime or sodium bicarbonate

PACKAGE AND TURNKEY FILTRATION SYSTEMS FOR PLASTICISERS, OLEUM TANKS, ASPHALT AND OTHER VENT GASES

Begg Cousland now have over 70 highly successful turnkey installations of Becofil candle filter mist eliminator systems removing plasticizer oil fumes from exhaust gas from ovens typically curing vinyl coated flooring and wallpaper, synthetic leather and laminated sheets (special films, belts, tarpaulins).

Specialised package systems are offered with beneficial designs for filtering contaminants from storage tank vents (Oleum, SO3) or processing materials such as Asphalt.

COMPRESSOR LUBE OIL AND PROCESS FUMES

Begg Cousland design and supply mist eliminator systems to remove oil mists. The range of applications is large, ranging from compressor lube oil removal, to machine workshop fumes and oil bath quench fumes in the metals industry. Purity of air or gas can be crucial to downstream operations or product quality.

For the most efficient removal of small and sub-micron mist, we supply candle filter type mist eliminators or the complete package system.
