AFL Light Brigade to add fibre optic sensing chapters

AFL’s education and training division Light Brigade has updated its oil and gas training programme.

As part of the improvements, new classrooms have been included and hands-on training extended to four days, with the addition of new chapters on fibre optic sensing theory and sensing applications.

Experienced instructors in the fibre optic industry will conduct the new oil and gas training course, which contains 16 hours of in-classroom training and 16 hours of hands-on training.

The latest fibre optic equipment will be used by the students to learn the methods of splicing, connectorising, testing and troubleshooting petrochemical-based optical fibre networks in oil and gas applications to increase efficiency.

According to AFL, the equipment will also help increase on-the-job safety requirements as well as reduce overall production costs and facilities downtime.

AFL Light Brigade vice president and general manager Dario De Paolis said that the use of fibre optic sensors in oil and gas applications is exploding.

"By expanding this course, we enable students to gain in-depth knowledge on how optical sensing is revolutionising the industry and receive additional hands-on skills training," Paolis added.

Professional animations demonstrating difficult-to-see concepts in the field are featured in the training programme, along with instructions on how fibre optic sensors are helpful in monitoring integrity, flow and security. Other topics covered by the training include pipelines, refineries, methods of testing, troubleshooting and terminating optical fibres for communications and monitoring equipment, including harsh environment cables and fibres.

Light Brigade has instructed more than 45,000 attendees worldwide in its public and custom classes since 1987.
