Ivanhoe Energy and Sunwing Energy have started drilling the N16-1E-1A exploration well in Nyalga block XVI in Mongolia.
The well, which is located on a 32km² structure, will be drilled to a total depth of 2,500m.
The drilling is being carried out by Daqing Exploration and will take about 30 days, with completion and testing to be carried out as required.
The firm plans to drill two wells on two separate structures, with the option to drill up to three additional wells in this initial exploratory programme.
