Air Products wins Yamal LNG project contract

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology and equipment provider Air Products has signed an agreement with a consortium including Technip and JGC to implement its technology at the Yamal LNG project in Russia.

The plant is currently under construction on the Yamal Peninsula. Once complete, it will become the largest LNG production and export facility in Russia.

LNG produced from the plant will be primarily used to meet the growing energy needs of countries in the Asia and Pacific region.

Three MCR main cryogenic heat exchangers supplied by the company will be installed at the heart of the propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant liquefaction process.

Using Air Products’ AP-C3MRTM LNG process technology and equipment, each of the units will produce 5.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG for the overall 16.5mtpa three-train facility.

Air Products LNG director Jim Solomon said that there are specific challenges with the project such as huge temperature swings beyond the remote location.

"Our equipment and process were specifically configured to address these challenges, and we are very excited at the prospect of playing a significant role in this landmark project," Solomon added.

Yamal LNG pre-operations deputy project director Igor Chasnyk said: "We are confident Air Products’ MCR process is the most suitable technology available within the parameters of the project, and we are looking forward to fruitful cooperation with Air Products and a successful start-up of the process trains according to the schedule."
