Report: North America tops globally with highest refining capacity under maintenance in Q2 2016

North America leads in terms of refining capacity under both planned and unplanned maintenance globally, at 2,552 million barrels a day (mbd), followed by Asia (2,511mbd) and the Middle East (221mbd), according to a GlobalData report.

Titled ‘Q2 2016 Global Refinery Maintenance Review – Asia Registers Highest Global Refining Capacity for Planned Maintenance’, the report states that North America, US, had the highest refining capacity refining capacity at 2,540mbd, while the Asian region was dominated by Japan and India with 135mbd and 881mbd, respectively.

Jamnagar II (580mbd) in India topped the list of refineries with highest capacity under both planned and unplanned maintenance, followed by Baytown (561mbd) in the US, and Kawasaki (516mbd) in Japan.

ExxonMobil Corporation, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. were the leading operators with the highest refining capacity under both planned and unplanned maintenance globally, at 926mbd, 580mbd and 516mbd respectively.

Among regions, Asia had the highest refining capacity under planned maintenance (2,511mbd) followed by North America (955mbd) and the Middle East (221mbd), while Japan (1,350mbd), US (943mbd) and India (881mbd) were the top three countries with the most refining capacity under planned maintenance.

The GlobalData report further reveals Jamnagar (580mbd) in India, Kawasaki (516mbd) in Japan, and Beaumont (365mbd) in the US were among the refineries that underwent the most planned maintenance in Q2 2016. The leading operators with the highest planned maintenance were RIL (580mbd), TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. (516mbd) and ExxonMobil Corporation (365mbd).

North America, South America and Europe were the most affected regions by unplanned maintenance in Q2 2016 at 1,597mbd, 110mbd and 60mbd respectively, while the US (1,597mbd), Ecuador (110mbd) and Czech Republic (60mbd) were the top three countries that experienced the most unplanned maintenance.

The top three operators with the highest refining capacity under unplanned maintenance were ExxonMobil Corporation (561mbd), BP plc (430mbd) and Phillips 66 (314mbd). The refineries that were most impacted by unplanned maintenance were Baytown (561mbd) and Houston II (292mbd) in the US, and Esmeraldas (110mbd) in Ecuador.
