Shell teams up with Thai firms to develop LNG terminal in Myanmar

Royal Dutch Shell has signed a joint development agreement with Italian-Thai Development and LNG Plus International to set up liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar.

The terminal will primarily include an LNG receiving and re-gasification terminal at Dawei special economic zone, reports Myanmar Times.

It is expected to serve as a centre for offloading LNG for on-shipping to businesses in Dawei, Thailand, and thereafter to be distributed in the rest of Myanmar. This will eliminate the need to ship LNG to the south around Singapore.

Shell Global LNG vice-president Roger Bounds was quoted by the local news publication as saying: "We believe that this opportunity will enable Shell, together with its partners, to bring its global expertise in LNG to Myanmar meeting the country’s energy aspirations."

Under the terms of the agreement, Shell will be responsible for offering technical expertise for the terminal development and also access terminal capacity and supply LNG to customers.

Further details about the agreement between Shell and the Thailand-based companies have not been disclosed.

The proposed terminal development is a part of a $1.7bn deal which aims at construction of the first phase of the Dawei special economic zone.

Though initially expected to serve developers inside the special economic zone, the terminal is intended to function as a conduit to Thailand and other areas in Myanmar in the future.
