Burckhardt Compression was appointed by Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals (GSFC) to deliver a Laby® (labyrinth piston) compressor for their methanol project in Baroda, Gujarat state, India.
Delivery of the Laby compressor will take place end of September 2010. The compressor will be installed in the 525 MTPD methanol plant, which is scheduled for start-up in March 2011. The process used in the methanol plant is designed by Haldor Topsoe.
Due to significant benefits in oxygen compression, the customer has chosen the Laby compressor. The responsible contractor for the project is Projects & Development India (PDIL).
The Laby compressor has a unique labyrinth sealing system on piston and piston rod gland that guarantees oil-free and contact-free compression. No contamination of the pure gas with abrasives can occur. Therefore it is the ideal and safest solution for oxygen compression. The Laby compressor has a clean safety record.
Laby compressors are used for industrial gases, gas transport and storage as well as in the chemical and petrochemical industry. The Laby is designed to compress bone-dry, dirty, abrasive and other gases with a discharge pressure up to 300bar (4,350psi) without contamination, flow up to 11,000Nm³/h (6,500scfm), shaft power up to 2,100kW (2,800HP). The compressors are extremely reliable machines with unexcelled availability, combining high performance with a unique cooling system.
