Norwegian firm TGS enters onshore 3D seismic survey in Wyoming

Geophysical consulting and contracting services firm TGS has announced a new multi-client US onshore 3D seismic survey, which will take place within the Powder River Basin in Johnson County, Wyoming.

Known as Voyager 3D, the survey is supported by industry funding and will surround an area of around 555km².

TGS noted that the project is strategically located in the ‘high potential trend’ to the north of the basin, where the stratigraphic part of stacked reservoirs exceeds a thickness of about 5,000ft.

The company outlined that unconventional targets of the project include the Niobrara and Mowry source rocks, alongside the upper and lower Cretaceous sandstones and the Pennsylvanian.

Permitting activities are expected to start this year, with the data recording scheduled for completion in December next year.

TGS said that the final products are expected to be available in the Q2-2022.

TGS CEO Kristian Johansen said: “While we are being very selective with respect to new onshore investments in the market, the Voyager 3D project is a good example of a project that checks all boxes with respect to the geology, activity, economics and customer support.

“This project, which is our second in the Powder River Basin, will allow our customers to de-risk their development activities, helping them to generate value in a challenging market.”

In January this year, TGS acquired the US onshore petrophysical log database and related intellectual property from Petrophysical Solutions.

In November 2019, TGS partnered with software solutions firm WhiteStar to provide combined data sources.
