Total set to resume work on $20bn Mozambique LNG project

The Mozambique Rovuma Offshore Area 1 consortium is set to resume work on the $20bn Mozambique LNG Project following implementation of the government’s additional security measures at the site.

Work on the Mozambique LNG project was temporarily closed in December 2020 after the security events that occurred near the site.

Following the event, Total and the Mozambique Government jointly worked to define and implement an action plan, which would increase the security of the Afungi site and of the surrounding area and neighbouring villages.

As a result, the area within a 25km perimeter surrounding the Mozambique LNG Project has been declared as a special security area by the Government of Mozambique.

Total said in a statement: “A comprehensive roadmap, including the reinforcement of the security infrastructure and the strengthening of the public security forces, has been defined and implemented, allowing a gradual remobilisation of the project workforce and the resumption of LNG plant construction activities as well as community development programs carried out by the project.”

Total said the project has met all relevant statutory conditions that are required for the first debt drawdown of the project financing.

The partners plan to deliver first cargo from the Mozambique LNG project in 2024.

The Mozambique LNG project comprises the Golfinho-Atum gas field development in the offshore Area 1 Block of the deepwater Rovuma Basin.

It also involves the construction of a 12.88 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) onshore LNG facility on the Cabo Delgado coast of Mozambique.
