Charles Thompson Limited (CTL) is one of the world’s leading fabricators specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke process plant equipment for the hydrocarbon industry. We provide our customers with shell and tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, columns, filtration and drying equipment, piping systems and complete pre-assembled units, for both on and offshore applications.

CTL, a process plant specialist for over 35 years, has vast experience in the mechanical design of coil type and shell and tube heat exchangers for the most demanding environments. Utilising our vast experience in cladding methods and technologies, we specialise in high-pressure and sour service applications.

Shell and tube heat exchangers

CTL provides thermal / mechanical design as well as the engineering and manufacture of shell and tube heat exchangers to ASME VIII, PD5500, EN 13445 and TEMA standards. This includes complete units, retrofits, re-tubing, cleaning and upgrades.

Recent projects completed by CTL include units manufactured in titanium grade 12, zirconium 702, tantalum, and hastelloy° B3, C2000, C22 and C276. Other regularly fabricated products include stainless steel, nickel alloy, duplex, super duplex, 410S clad, Inco 82 clad, and alloy 625 clad exchangers.

Serpentine coil exchangers

CTL offers serpentine coil exchangers, which are predominantly manufactured from thin-wall heat exchanger tubes. Thicker pipe schedules have also been utilised both by cold forming and induction-bending techniques.

Shell and tube heat exchanger systems

Exchangers can be incorporated into complete packaged systems to reduce on-site installation requirements, providing significant benefits for both offshore and site shutdown requirements.

Complete pre-assembled heat exchangers

Working to customers’ piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), CTL can develop complete packaged systems / pre-assembled units, incorporating structural design, piping stress analysis, isometric design, detailed design, valve and instrumentation supply, pipe spool, vessel column and exchanger fabrication, mechanical assembly, lifting equipment, insulation, heat tracing, controls / electrical installation, testing, and commissioning.

Corrosion-resistant alloys and cladding for tubesheets, channel headers, heat exchangers, vessels and piping systems

CTL has vast experience in cladding applications from tubesheets and channel headers to complete heat exchangers, vessels, columns and piping systems. Equipment is supplied utilising roll bonded, explosive bonded and especially various weld overlay techniques in which CTL is specialised.

Recent projects completed include alloy 625, alloy 825 and 316L clad vessels for the Harweel Field Development Project. CTL can also offer cladding of individual components for machining or fabrication by others, if required.

Pressure vessels and columns

CTL manufactures pressure vessels and columns at our current facilities, which can be manufactured in diameters up to 6.5m, lengths up to 45m and individual component weights up to 100,000kg, with wall thicknesses up to 100mm from plate and 135mm thick from forgings.

CTL has manufactured pressure vessels and columns for both on and offshore applications, as well as petrochemical, oil and gas, chemical, fine and agro-chemical, pharmaceutical, nuclear, food and water treatment plants worldwide. Materials include carbon steels, HIC-resistant steels, stainless, duplex and super-duplex steels, nickel alloys, corrosion-resistant metals, and nickel alloys and clad combinations.

Pharmaceutical filtration and drying equipment

CTL is a market leader in the supply of Nutsch-type filter dryers and pressure filters to the world’s leading pharmaceutical and fine chemical manufacturers. Our range of equipment covers laboratory-sized units, all the way through to bulk manufacturing machines, which are designed and manufactured at our current UK site. Typical materials for the units include Hastelloy° C2000, C22 and C276, and stainless steels 316L and 304L.
