PipeChina begins construction on gas pipeline in China

PipeChina, known formally as China Oil and Gas Pipeline Network, has reportedly commenced construction on the $1.3bn natural gas trunk line in north China.

Citing PipeChina’s official statement on Wechat platform, Reuters reported that the new natural gas pipeline will connect an import terminal in Tianjin, a major port city in the country’s north-eastern region, and Xiongan near Beijing.

The 413.5km-long line, which will have 1.106m diameter, is one of the company’s latest investments since its launch in October 2020.

The new trunkline will have the capacity to transport 6.6 billion cubic meters of gas, which represents about 2% of total gas consumption in the Asian country.

PipeChina plans to connect the new pipeline with several other projects, including Shaanjing pipelines, which are designed to transport gas from China’s northwest fields to Beijing.

The new line will also be connected with the Power of Siberia project, which is equipped to transport Russian gas to China.

In December last year, PipeChina started operations on the 1,110km middle portion of the China-Russia East natural gas pipeline.

The pipeline transports natural gas from the Power of Siberia system in Russia to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in northern China.

With a capacity of 27 million cubic metres of gas supply per day, the pipeline is expected to promote economic development alongside the rust-belt areas, as well as improve air quality in the region.
