Neste and Air bp provide sustainable aviation fuel to European airports

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer Neste has signed an agreement with Air bp to provide an increased amount of SAF to airport customers this year and the next year.

The volume to be provided will be five times more than was supplied last year.

Air bp will provide Neste-produced SAF at selected European airports, including Stockholm Airport (ARN) and Oslo Airport (OSL). The deliveries are set to commence in the next few weeks.

The increased SAF supply follows the rising demand by airline customers and Norway, which has mandated 0.5% of its jet fuel to be SAF.

Air bp CEO Martin Thomsen said: “bp’s ambition is to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner and to help the world get to net zero. Air bp aims to support our customers and the wider aviation industry on their path to meet their low carbon goals.

“We believe sustainable aviation fuel will play an important role as the industry recovers from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Through our successful ongoing collaboration with Neste, we are pleased to be able to offer our customers a substantially increased volume of SAF as they work towards reducing their emissions.”

Made from completely renewable waste and residue raw materials, Neste’s SAF produces 80% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuel.

The sustainable aviation fuel capacity of Neste each year is currently 100,000t.

It is currently expanding its Singapore refinery and expects additional investment for its Rotterdam refinery. With the upgrades, the capacity will increase to 1.5 million tonnes of SAF each year by 2023.

Last month, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the US announced plans to cut down carbon emissions with Neste’s SAF as part of its efforts towards net-zero carbon.
